An average cycling day!

We got off in good time for a first day and managed 11.5 miles before we had our first puncture. The curse of the touring cyclist hit as it was a rear wheel puncture on the Mechanic's trusty steed. We weren't really pushed for time, but in his rush to get on with job he turned the bike upside down with the water bottles still in their cages, resulting in a small river of water and one smashed water bottle (just to prove that plastic is not indestructible). Back on the road we made another 6 miles progress before I picked up the first oily chain mark on my leg and a further 6 miles before our first cake stop.

It was a fairly easy route today, 65 miles and no major climbs, and as we knew most of the route from other rides we weren't expecting any major surprises. The one we did get was after lunch, when a road that ran down to the north bank of a canal and the same road running away from the opposite bank were not connected - both just ended at the canal! This meant a fairly substantial diversion into Bridgewater and back out, but fortunately the map section I had printed off just about covered it - otherwise I might not be typing this but languishing in the nearest A&E department.

We weren't expecting too much silliness on this section of the route, so you can guess how pleased I was to discover the giant Pluto in a garden on our route to the canal bank - almost made the diversion worthwhile. See photos below to admire what the artist is trying to say........  Also, in the sleepy village of Chedzoy we found the following notice at the Village Hall: ' Fresh from my triumph at the Moorlynch Village Fete, where I won first prize in the Great British Bake-Off.....'(or possibly won the best Victoria Sponge category in the Flower and Produce section) 'I can now, for a limited period offer quality baked goods to discerning residents (Mary Berry eat you heart out - actually I'm not sure whether Mary Berry has anything to do with baking but the name sounds familiar). Personally I'm thinking of trying to win the Great British Baked Bean can opening contest at the Bellhouse Walk Fete, but need some practice.
Today's pictures are 'Art in Somerset' and 'The Mechanic at Work'
